This website is run by Event Essex. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website and we're committed to providing an accessible web presence by making the information and resources we provide accessible to all web users.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

On some pages empty links are rendered on web pages. If text descriptions or links are missing from a web page this could create confusion for users of screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Context) and 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We plan to address this issue by 01/05/26.
On the majority of our webpages, text scaling and zooming is disabled on touch screen devices. This prevents users scaling text or zooming into the page without the use of assistive technologies such as a screen magnifier. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.4 (Resize text). We plan to address this issue to enable text scaling and zooming on touch screen devices by 01/05/26
On some pages, in certain areas the colour contrast is insufficient. This can present a problem for users with low-vision or colour-blindness. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast minimum). We plan to address all contrast issues by 01/05/26.
Our <html> pages have not set a defined language, which prevents users of assisted technology from knowing what the default language of the web page is. This fails WCAG 2.1. success criterion 3.5.7. We plan to fix this by 01/05/26
Some of our link text is the same but used for multiple different destinations on the same page. This makes it difficult for some people to know where the link points to without further explanation. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link purpose (in context)). We plan to ensure all of our link text is unique for each new destination by 01/05/26. We'll make sure any new links added are unique.
Some of the alternative descriptions we have used for images across the website aren't descriptive enough and as such can make it difficult for users of assisted technology to fully understand the context of the image. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1. We will ensure all current images are addressed by 01/05/26. We will ensure that all future images added will have full descriptive alternative text.
On some pages, when navigating by keyboard, focused components cannot be visually identified. If the focused component is not somehow highlighted, the user cannot be sure which component has focus. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (Focus visible). We plan to address this issue to ensure all areas are clearly highlighted when in focus by 01/05/26.

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We plan to add text alternatives for all images by 1 May 2026. When we publish new content we'll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Some form fields do not have explicit labels, only implied ones, and this may interfere with screen reader functionality. This fails WCAG success criterion 3.3.2 (labels or Instructions).

We plan to examine the third-party templates that we use for these forms and update them whenever possible, and also to assess whether or not we can make the required fixes ourselves, by 1 May 2026.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently aware of any items that we would consider to be a disproportionate burden to fix.

Navigation and accessing information

The user may experience issues when changing the device orientation from horizontal to vertical and when changing text size. In all tests this has been resolved with a page refresh.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

As the existing issues are with templating provided by a third party, we will consult the third party for updates that resolve the issues as soon as possible.

This website was last tested on 20/03/2024 against the WCAG 2.1 AA standard.

The test was carried out by the University of Essex on behalf of Event Essex. All publicly accessible pages were tested.
